Day Trips in Southern Oklahoma

Broken Bow

Broken Bow is home to Beaver’s Bend State Park and is also near the fun and exciting town of Hochatown.

Many people think the best time to visit Broken Bow is in the summer months. Well, that is true for the most part. But that doesn’t mean that this town shuts down for the winter.

In fact, Broken Bow is home to an array of activities you can participate in.

Especially if you have kids.

The Beavers Bend Mining Company will keep your kids entertained and educated at the same time. They will have a great time discovering gemstones, shark teeth, and trilobites the way gold prospectors used to find gold and other gems.

Broken Bow is also home to the Hochatown Rescue Center & Petting Zoo. The Zoo offers a unique experience to kids of all ages. They have all the animals of a typical petting zoo such as goats, rabbits, horses, & snakes.

For those who want some adult fun, Broken Bow has axe throwing, jeep rentals, and zip-lining adventures inside this small town. As far as Christmas break day trips are concerned, this place is packed with fun-filled activities.

Don’t sleep on Medicine Park

Medicine Park, Oklahoma

Medicine Park is a great Christmas break day trip if you ask me.

This cobblestone community located in Southwestern Oklahoma has lots to offer for anyone that is wanting to explore beautiful territory.

They have bison lookout points, a phenomenal aquarium, and lots of cool shops and restaurants that make this road trip worthy.

Again, this is a place that gets lots of attention during the summer months, but I like going here during the winter too.

If you can catch the weather just right, a hiking trail that is a favorite of mine is called the 40-foot hole trail. This trail will give you a different perspective of the Sooner State’s landscape. With panoramic canyon views and a spectacular waterfall, the 40-foot hole is a must-see attraction in this part of the region.

The 40-foot hole trail boasts some incredible views of the Wichita Mountains.

Sulphur-Davis Area

The Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies is one of many stopping points in the Sulphur-Davis Area.

The Sulphur-Davis Area is home to beautiful wildlife, unique food options, and several activities that can keep you entertained on a yearly basis.

The Arbuckle Mountain Wilderness is a drive-through interactive zoo that kids of all ages adore. From Zebras to Giraffes, the wilderness is over 400 acres of exotic animals just roaming free.

The Sulphur-Davis area is also home to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. What was formerly Platt National Park, this is the perfect Christmas break day trip to unwind and revel in the sounds of nature.

As far as food options are concerned, the famous Arbuckle Mountain fried pies are a traditional stopping point when I am coming to visit.

You can choose any flavor ranging from peach to blackberry. If fried pies aren’t your thing, then the Bedre Chocolate factory is also a favorite of mine.

If you don’t like chocolate, then I’m not sure we can be friends, (just kidding) but seriously these are two places to satisfy your sweet tooth when visiting the Arbuckle Mountains.

Thoughts & Takeaways

And that wraps things up for today. The Sooner State has many places to choose from when it comes to planning a Christmas break day trip. Obviously, just like anything else, the summer months are going to offer you more activities than the winter months. There are several fun towns that have historic museums and outstanding food options that didn’t get mentioned, but I will save them for a rainy day. I hope you get to spend some quality time with your family and friends during the holidays. Please mention your favorite Christmas break day trips in the comment section below.
