The Mount Scott Overlook: The Perfect Day Trip in Oklahoma

Hi there!

Today we are going to take a visit to the Mount Scott Overlook.

If you are interested in what the ideal day trip in Oklahoma looks like, then this article is for you!

Located on the eastern edge of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, Mount Scott is one of Oklahoma’s most prominent mountains. A three-mile-long paved road leads to the summit and a breathtaking view of southwest Oklahoma. The peak towers 2,464 feet above sea level.

I have been coming here for years, and quite honestly, I’m surprised I haven’t shared this with you.

Without further ado, let’s jump into the article!

The Mount Scott Overlook: The Perfect Day Trip

You get the best view in the house from the top of the Mount Scott Overlook when it comes to spectacular sunsets.

Firstly, the Mount Scott Overlook is a beast of a mountain when it comes to Oklahoma mountains.

For one thing, Oklahoma is mostly flat, so we don’t have a lot of room to boast when it comes to these mountains.

Which brings us to Mount Scott.

Mount Scott is a prominent mountain just to the northwest of Lawton, Oklahoma rising to a height of 2,464 feet.

I know, these aren’t the Rocky Mountains by any means, but one thing is certain, they aren’t short of beauty.

How to Get There

From Oklahoma City, take I-44 south to Medicine Park/Hwy 49 exit and follow signs to the Wichita Mtn. Wildlife refuge. Immediately after you enter the refuge, you will see a small lake and parking lot with bathrooms on the left side of the road. Park here.

The trail starts on the other side of the road approximately 1/4 mile north of the parking lot. The trail has a gate that has a sign that says, “do not block gate”.

Perfect for Sunsets

Do we have any sunset chasers out here?

If you are, then this needs to be your next stop for your golden hour.

I don’t want to come across biased by any means, but nothing beats a good ole fashioned Oklahoma sunset!

The Mount Scott Overlook is the best place to take these in!

Hikers love it.

Hiking Mount Scott in Oklahoma is an experience that leaves an indelible mark on visitors, especially those with a misconception of the state’s natural beauty.

Reaching the summit is a moment of triumph, rewarding hikers with an unparalleled view of the wildlife refuge and beyond. On Saturday’s and Sunday’s, you can hike to the top beginning at 6 am.

Something that is noteworthy, you have to be off of the mountain by noon to allow yourself to be safe for drivers.

Reward Yourself with Meers Afterwards!

What good is a hike if you come down here and don’t reward yourself?

Perhaps it’s a treat yourself, or a dopamine reward system. But nonetheless, I feel like it’s important to have some sort of carrot chasing when it comes to hiking.

My treat of choice in this area? Meers Burgers.

Reward yourself at the end of your hike to the top of the Mount Scott Overlook with a juicy longhorn burger from Meers.

Fresh longhorn beef and all the trimmings. Complimentary cobbler with your choice of peach or blackberry.

You know where I am going with this.

Everyone deserves a reward after a challenging hike, and this is the perfect place. So, load the car, take your family or friends and catch a sunset and a delicious meal. This will top off a perfect day trip in Oklahoma. If you don’t believe me, then find out for yourself!
