The Little Missouri Trail: Getting There

Coming right off of Highway 84, you will look for signs for Eagle Rock Loop. You can decide if you want to do the shorter route or the full loop.

Finding the trail was easier than I expected. The Little Missouri Trail lies near Glenwood, Arkansas. To reach the trailhead, I drove along Arkansas Highway 84 until I hit U.S. Forest Road 25. From there, a few well-marked signs led me straight to the trail’s starting point. Fortunately, parking was easy, and the area felt safe and well maintained.

The full trail stretches about 15 miles one way, forming part of the larger Eagle Rock Loop. Because of that, you can choose a shorter out-and-back or complete the loop for a multi-day hike.

What to Expect on the Trail

Even though the trail has moderate elevation changes, I found it manageable with decent hiking shoes.

You can expect gorgeous scenery of the Ouachita National Forest and the Missouri River on this trail.

From the start, the trail offered a quiet and peaceful experience. I could hear birds, running water, and the wind through the trees. The trail follows the Little Missouri River, which added a relaxing soundtrack to every step. In fact, I crossed the river several times using well-built footbridges and stone steps.

Each section of the trail felt unique. One minute I was walking through lush forest, and the next I stood atop rocky ridges. Even though the trail has moderate elevation changes, I found it manageable with decent hiking shoes.

Highlights Along the Way

One of the best spots on the Little Missouri Trail was the Winding Stairs area.

I love the winding stairs area of this trail. It’s not too challenging, but the views are worth it!

I also loved the Narrows, a section where the river squeezes between high bluffs. By the time I reached this part, I had already seen deer, squirrels, and a wide variety of birds. Additionally, wildflowers lined many parts of the trail, especially in spring.

Tips for a Smooth Hike

I packed light but brought plenty of water and snacks. Still, I wish I’d packed water shoes for river crossings after heavy rains. To be clear, the trail itself is well marked, but I used a GPS app just in case.

Cell service was spotty, so I downloaded maps ahead of time. Also, I brought a small first aid kit and a flashlight, even though I planned a day hike. Above all, respecting the trail and following Leave No Trace principles helped me preserve this beautiful place.

Best Time to Visit

Because the trail runs along the river, it stays cool even in warmer months.

I hiked this trail in April, but I think I would prefer to do this trail in the fall and catch the autumn foliage.

To each their own right?

Because the trail runs along the river, it stays cool even in warmer months. Still, summer hikes require more water and sun protection. Winters can get cold, but the trail remains open year-round.

Nonetheless, with the proper preparation any season will be great for the Little Missouri.

Planning an Overnight Trip

For backpackers, the trail offers multiple campsites with river access. I passed several flat, shaded areas perfect for pitching a tent. Before you go, make sure to check for any fire restrictions or weather alerts.

I didn’t camp overnight this time, but I met other hikers who did. According to them, the stars were breathtaking, and the sounds of the forest made for peaceful sleep. Eventually, I plan to return for a full Eagle Rock Loop adventure.

Thoughts & Takeaways

And that will wrap things up for today.

After spending a full day on the Little Missouri Trail, I left feeling refreshed and grateful. The natural beauty, quiet solitude, and rich variety of landscapes gave me everything I look for in a hike. More importantly, the trail reminded me of Arkansas’ incredible outdoor treasures.

In conclusion, this trail suits hikers of all levels, whether you’re in it for a few hours or several days. It’s easy to find, hard to forget, and worth every step. Therefore, if you’re looking for your next nature escape, the Little Missouri Trail should be high on your list.
