Getting to the Friends Trail Loop

First things First, please download a map.
To reach the trailhead, take Highway 259 and turn onto 259A. As you continue, keep an eye out for a right turn onto Beavers Bend Road just before crossing the dam. A parking lot will be located about 0.1 miles down the road on your right. The parking fee is $10 and can be paid via phone—if you have service. However, don’t be surprised if you experience sporadic phone reception. For peace of mind, you can purchase parking ahead of time on the Beavers Bend State Park website.
Next, be aware that there is no overview map available at the trailhead, which is rare. But, I found a helpful trail map on All Trails, which I highly recommend you check out before you go. Also, keep in mind that there are no bathrooms at the trailhead or along the trail, so plan accordingly.

Exploring the Trail

Once you arrive at the trailhead, you’ll cross a small footbridge. At this point, you’ll have a choice: go left or right. Since the trail is a loop, there’s no wrong choice. However, your experience will differ depending on which direction you choose.
If you head left, you’ll quickly be walking alongside the Mountain Fork River. The river’s peaceful sound and beautiful scenery will surround you. Alternatively, if you turn right, you’ll immediately face a steep hill. This route leads you through the woods and will offer a more challenging first half of the hike.
I opted to go left, and after about a quarter of a mile, I arrived at the Mountain Fork River. The rushing water flowed over large boulders, creating mini-waterfalls that added to the picturesque view. In fact, this part of the trail is particularly scenic, offering many opportunities to take photos. Despite the popularity of the trail, there are plenty of spots where you can capture shots of the river without other hikers in the frame.
A Beautiful, But Slippery Path

Furthermore, you need to pay close attention to the weather. After a rain, this trail can be slick in a lot of areas!
I experienced this firsthand on my hike. Therefore, it’s important to watch your step as you navigate tree roots, rocks, and mud. You’ll ascend along the river, and eventually, the trail will lead you to the top of a hill.
At this point, you’ll be rewarded with the best view of the hike. From the top, you’ll see a breathtaking view of the waterfall below. If you’re lucky, you might find a bench where you can sit and take in the beauty of the landscape. It’s the perfect spot to pause and reflect on the hike so far.
Completing the Loop
After leaving the river, you’ll face a steep climb through the woods. The trail will then level out, allowing you to stroll through the trees. Next, you’ll begin a gradual descent down the hill, and eventually, the trail flattens out. At this point, you’ll be on your way back to the parking lot. Finally, the trail will bring you back to the footbridge and parking area where you started.
Thoughts & Takeaways
And that will wrap things up for today. The Friends Trail Loop offers a wonderful combination of natural beauty and a moderate challenge. While there may be some difficult sections, particularly along the river, the scenic views and peaceful environment more than make up for it. This trail is perfect for those looking to experience the stunning landscapes of Beavers Bend State Park without committing to a long, strenuous hike.
In conclusion, the Friends Trail Loop is a highly rewarding hike that offers a blend of forest and river views, along with a few moderate climbs. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a beginner, this trail offers something for everyone. So pack your gear, bring your camera, and enjoy a fantastic day out in nature. You’ll surely leave with memories of one of Oklahoma’s most beautiful trails.
