The Buffalo National River: The Crown Jewel of Arkansas

Hi there! Today we are going to talk about the Buffalo National River.

Nestled in the heart of the Ozarks, the Buffalo National River flows wild and free. It’s one of the last undammed rivers in the lower 48 states, and it’s a crown jewel of Arkansas.

This past weekend, we had the pleasure of spending a 3-day weekend in the Ozark National Forest for my 46th birthday. It was time to finally float the Buffalo, and we made it happen in unforgettable style.

Without further ado, lets jump into the article!

The Buffalo National River: 135 Miles of Pure Fun

The water is crystal-clear, and the towering limestone cliffs create postcard-perfect moments at every bend.

A couple of years ago, my wife Dawna and I visited Hot Springs. We had a great time then, and we knew we’d be back. So, for my birthday weekend, we decided to return and bring our daughter Maddy—who’s almost six—along for the adventure.

We burned a PTO day on Friday and made the five-hour drive to Jasper, Arkansas, the night before. Jasper is tucked away in Newton County, surrounded by dense forest and scenic mountain ridges.

In fact, we’d made some great memories in Arkansas before. During the Covid year, we spent a weekend in Cotter near the White River. We hiked along parts of the Buffalo then and talked about floating it someday. Well, someday finally arrived.

My daughter Maddy and wife Dawna had a blast celebrating my birthday on the river.

Cabin Comfort and Easy Planning

After making our reservations with Buffalo River Outfitters, our canoes were waiting on us at Tyler Bend.

We rented a cozy, beautiful cabin right in Jasper. It gave us easy access to everything and plenty of space to relax. The next morning, we were ready for the main event—our float trip.

We had booked through Buffalo River Outfitters in nearby St. Joe, Arkansas. The check-in process, which runs from 9 a.m. to noon daily, was smooth and quick. The staff was warm and welcoming. They even had valet service, which was a big help. We handed off our spare key, knowing our vehicle would be waiting when we finished the float.

Additionally, their on-site gift shop had everything you could want—souvenirs, supplies, and a helpful team ready to assist.

Floating the River: A Day to Remember

The Buffalo River brings many tourists from all over the country to enjoy the stunning scenery of the Ozark Mountains.

We hit the water around noon with a six-mile float planned from Tyler Bend to Grinders Ferry. The canoe rental cost us $80 and comfortably held the three of us. For the price, it was a fantastic deal for a full day of outdoor adventure.

The river’s current was steady from recent rains, which kept us moving at a good pace. Meanwhile, we took our time, stopping to swim, snack, and enjoy the towering bluffs that make this area so unique.

All along the way, we saw families paddling, couples lounging in tubes, and kids jumping off rocks. Maddy was thrilled and full of energy. Her laughter echoed across the water.

We stayed mindful of the 6 p.m. cutoff and made it to Grinders Ferry with plenty of time. Afterward, we loaded up and headed back with tired arms and full hearts.

Directions to the Adventure

Depending on which way you are coming from, cell service isn’t the best, so I want to give you decent directions.

If you’re coming from Fort Smith, take I-40 east to Highway 21 north through Clarksville, then connect to Highway 7 north straight into Jasper. The trip is roughly 2 hours and 30 minutes.

From Little Rock, take Highway 65 north toward St. Joe. Then take Highway 74 west into Jasper. This route takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Either way, the drive offers scenic views and rolling hills that are worth the trip on their own.

Why You Should Float the Buffalo

From t-shirts to stickers the gift shop has something for everyone.

Let’s be honest—if you don’t float a river in the summer, did you even have a good summer? The Buffalo National River is more than a float trip. It’s an immersive natural experience.

Not only that, it’s family-friendly, affordable, and packed with visual beauty. The water is crystal-clear, and the towering limestone cliffs create postcard-perfect moments at every bend.

Also, the area is rich in history, wildlife, and outdoor recreation. Hiking, fishing, and exploring nearby caves are all within reach.

Thoughts & Takeaways

And that will wrap things up for today.

This birthday trip was one for the books. The Buffalo National River gave us everything we hoped for—peace, beauty, and fun for the whole family.

Above all, we made lasting memories that we’ll cherish for years to come. Floating the Buffalo reminded us how vital it is to unplug and spend time in nature. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone or simply chasing adventure, this river has something special for everyone.

So, if you’re considering a summer getaway, make it the Buffalo. Pack your favorite drinks, book your canoe, and soak up everything this stunning river has to offer.

You won’t regret it.
