Quartz Mountain State Park: A Weekend Escape.

Due to stormy weather, our family was glad we elected on a cabin vs tent camping.

This past weekend, my family and I loaded up and hit another state park. This time, it was Quartz Mountain, located in southwest Oklahoma. The park sits near Lake Altus-Lugert and is surrounded by breathtaking granite peaks. As we arrived, the April weather lived up to its reputation—wild and unpredictable.

Rather than pitch a tent, we chose the comfort of a cabin. Leaving Norman on Friday night, we reached the park close to 9 PM. Thankfully, we missed most of the storms on the road. My Tacoma was packed down with groceries, ice chests, fishing poles, and of course—my kayak.

Quartz Mountain State Park Has a Beautiful Lodge

The lookout restaurant inside the newly renovated lodge had wonderful food including brick oven pizzas.

Checking in, we went straight to the newly remodeled lodge, which was built in 2020. It’s modern, clean, and offers rooms with either a mountainside or lake view. They even gave us a tour so we could choose our preference. Eventually, we headed to our cabin to settle in.

Surprisingly, the cabin didn’t come with standard kitchenware—no pots, pans, or silverware. Nevertheless, the cozy space and location made up for it. The thunderstorms that rolled in overnight added to the rustic experience.

Making the Most of a Rainy Saturday

Due to the stormy morning, our outdoor plans were delayed. Instead, we made the 30-minute drive to Altus for supplies and a hot meal. The missing cookware was inconvenient, but ultimately, it gave us an excuse to explore the nearby town.

Back at the park, we enjoyed a meal at The Lookout, the lodge’s on-site restaurant. The pizza was excellent, and the view from the dining area was even better—overlooking a scenic pavilion and a fountain carved from native rock.

Moreover, the staff was incredibly accommodating. They even gave us access to the indoor pool, which was a lifesaver during the rainy stretch.

Sunshine, Wildlife, and Campfire Memories

We had several deer come by and visit the cabin which was a huge bonus.

By late afternoon, the clouds cleared, giving us the perfect window for a campfire. Hot dogs cooked over an open flame taste better at the lake—no matter how much you usually dislike them.

As we sat around the fire, we reflected on the trip. We were still in a beautiful state park surrounded by wildlife and peace. Deer walked right up to our cabin. Meanwhile, hawks circled above, completing the perfect Oklahoma backdrop.

Lake Altus Lugert gives people great fishing opportunities.

Sunday morning brought sun but left behind a muddy, waterlogged landscape. Because of the rain, the hiking trails were unsafe, and the boat ramp was closed. Still, we fished near the docks after checkout and enjoyed a simple picnic lunch between casts.

Interestingly, I had last visited the park in 2019 with my brother. The upgrades since then—especially to the bathrooms and lodge—were obvious. Quartz Mountain is not just surviving—it’s thriving.

Directions and Travel Tips

From Oklahoma City, head west on I-40 and take exit 53 toward Altus. Follow US-283 south and continue onto OK-44, leading you directly to Lone Wolf and the park entrance. In total, the trip takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes, making it an easy weekend getaway.

Keep in mind, cell service is spotty in some areas. Bring maps, supplies, and extra gear—especially if you plan to cook or fish. Cabins and lodge rooms book quickly, so calling ahead is essential.

Thoughts & Takeaways

And that will wrap things up for today.

Quartz Mountain State Park offers more than just a weekend escape—it delivers perspective, peace, and memories. Despite a few weather hiccups, our trip reminded us how much beauty exists right here in Oklahoma.

In short, the park is a blend of rugged mountains, clear lake water, and friendly hospitality. The recent renovations, indoor activities, and natural charm make it perfect for families, couples, or solo adventurers. Whether you’re hiking, fishing, or just watching hawks glide across the sky, there’s always something to enjoy.

Ultimately, Quartz Mountain proves that adventure doesn’t need a perfect forecast—just the right mindset and a sense of wonder.
