Lucille’s Roadhouse: The Woman Behind the Legacy

Lucille Hamons didn’t just serve food—she served community, compassion, and cold drinks. For almost 60 years to be exact.
Known for her warm smile and generous spirit, she became a cherished figure to many, earning her the nickname “Mother of the Mother Road.”
Moreover, her original station, known as the “Provine Station,” was built in the iconic Bungalow Craftsman style. The design included an open bay, vintage gas pumps, and an upper-level home where Lucille lived with her husband Carl and their three children.
Notably, travelers would stop for her hearty food, cool drinks—“the coldest in the state of Oklahoma”—and her unmatched hospitality. She treated everyone like family, whether they were just passing through or lifelong locals.
A Legacy Carried Forward: Rick Koch’s Dedication

One such local, Rick Koch of Weatherford, never forgot Lucille’s hospitality. A Route 66 enthusiast, Koch admired Lucille’s joy-of-living and passion for the open road.
As a result, he purchased and restored Lucille’s original service station to preserve her memory and to share it with others. Today, the station stands proudly along Route 66, offering visitors a timeless photo opportunity and a connection to a bygone era.
Furthermore, Lucille’s service station earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Two years later, the Oklahoma Route 66 Association inducted Lucille into their Hall of Fame.
Weatherford

Lucille’s legacy doesn’t stop at the old station. Rick Koch extended her tradition of service and hospitality by opening Lucille’s Roadhouse in Weatherford. Located just off I-40 and Route 66, this modern diner offers more than just great food—it offers a nostalgic journey back in time.
The interior reflects classic 1950s Americana with neon lights, vintage memorabilia, and checkerboard floors. In addition, the menu blends traditional diner fare with Oklahoma favorites—from juicy burgers to hand-cut steaks and creamy milkshakes.

Meanwhile, service remains top-tier, echoing Lucille’s tradition of treating every guest like a friend.
Hotel with Heart

Equally important, the spirit of Lucille lives on in Clinton, Oklahoma, where a second Lucille’s Restaurant thrives. Also, Lucille’s Hotel in Weatherford provides weary travelers a comfortable, friendly place to rest—just as Lucille did decades ago.
Whether you’re on a cross-country road trip or just enjoying a weekend getaway, you’ll feel the charm and hospitality that made Lucille a legend.

I grew up in Hydro and visited Lucilles often. Her daughter gave me piano lessons upstairs. She may fix you a sandwich but never had a diner. She is my nephew’s great grandme.
