Arrival at Greenleaf State Park: A Welcoming Experience

As my work week came to an end, I headed out to Greenleaf State Park, located in Muskogee County. I had just finished a busy week seeing clients in Abilene, TX, and despite being a little late to check in on Friday, I was still welcomed with open arms. Fortunately, the staff at the park had kept their promise. When I arrived at the park’s office, my cabin key was waiting for me. It was late in the evening, but the staff made sure everything was set up for a smooth check-in.
The weather for the weekend looked promising, so I was eager to enjoy the outdoors. I had brought my kayak and ice chest, ready for some adventure on the lake. After picking up my key, I headed straight to my cabin, which was a pleasant surprise. Having visited Greenleaf State Park previously in the fall of 2019, I noticed that the cabins had received some much-needed upgrades. The improvements were evident as soon as I unlocked the door.
Fishing and Outdoor Activities: A Day on the Lake

The next morning, I was eager to get out on the water, so I launched my kayak early, around 9 a.m. I made my way to the lake, which was beautifully calm. I fished near the dam and had a great time. The lake was teeming with fish, and I managed to catch about three before the wind started to pick up. Although the wind was a bit of a challenge, I was satisfied with the morning’s catch. After all, fishing is about the experience, not just the number of fish you catch. This lake reminded me of McGee Creek in Atoka when it comes to the fishing. I had written about this park a few years back and here is the here.
By noon, it was time to break for lunch. I decided to check out the park’s marina, which is conveniently located right on the lake. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food at the marina. They served some of the best cheeseburgers I’ve ever had, and the laid-back atmosphere made for a delightful midday meal. After finishing my lunch, I felt recharged and ready for more outdoor exploration.
A Friendly Interaction: Engaging with the Oklahoma Wildlife Department
Later in the afternoon, I had the opportunity to meet Colton, an intern from the Oklahoma Wildlife Department, who was conducting a survey at the park. He was friendly and very knowledgeable about the park’s wildlife. We had a great conversation about the park’s natural surroundings, and I was impressed with his enthusiasm for preserving Oklahoma’s wildlife.
Colton shared his passion for the outdoors, and I was more than happy to fill out a survey that would help improve the park’s services. He couldn’t have been nicer, and his love for nature was contagious. It was refreshing to meet someone so dedicated to conservation and the outdoors. Having such positive interactions with staff members really added to the experience at Greenleaf.
Fishing and Sunset: A Perfect End to the Day

In the evening, I couldn’t resist getting back on the water for some more fishing. The wind had settled down, making conditions much more favorable. I spent another few hours on the lake, catching a few more fish before the golden hour arrived. As the sun set over the lake, the colors in the sky were breathtaking. There’s something magical about being out on the water during sunset, and it felt like the perfect way to wrap up a day of fishing and relaxation.
Exploring the Trails: A Sunday Morning Hike

On Sunday morning, I decided to squeeze in a quick hike before packing up and heading home. The trail system at Greenleaf is well-maintained, and I was able to enjoy a peaceful 45-minute hike through the park’s lush surroundings. The trail rewarded me with stunning views, including several scenic overlooks. With every step, I felt more connected to nature, and the beauty of the park was simply awe-inspiring.
A Visit to the Gift Shop: Souvenirs and Friendly Faces

After finishing my hike, I stopped by the park’s office to check out the gift shop. I had the pleasure of meeting Kayla, a staff member who was friendly and knowledgeable about Greenleaf and other state parks in Oklahoma. She was more than happy to help me pick out a few souvenirs for my wife and child. I ended up purchasing a sweatshirt, a stuffed animal, and a few stickers. It’s always nice to bring back a little piece of the experience for loved ones.
Thoughts & Takeaways
And that will wrap things up for today. All in all, my weekend at Greenleaf State Park was a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The park’s natural beauty, combined with its excellent facilities and friendly staff, made for a truly memorable experience. The upgrades to the cabins were a pleasant surprise, and the activities available, from fishing to hiking, provided ample opportunities to connect with nature. The staff’s passion for the park and its visitors was evident, and I left feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. With its beautiful lake, upgraded accommodations, and friendly atmosphere, it’s an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful and enjoyable time away from the daily grind. Whether you’re a solo traveler, a couple, or a family, Greenleaf has something to offer everyone. I’m already looking forward to my next visit to this charming state park!
