Big Sur California: An Unforgettable Trip

Hi there! Today we are going to discuss our recent trip out to Big Sur California.

And what a trip it was!

Big Sur, California, is one of the most beautiful spots on the West Coast. During our spring break trip to visit my brother Timmy in California, we decided to explore this stunning stretch of coastline. In addition to our visit to the Muir Woods National Monument, we spent a day soaking in the natural beauty of Big Sur.

With its dramatic cliffs, lush forests, and breathtaking ocean views, Big Sur is truly a place that must be seen to be believed. In this article, I’ll take you through our unforgettable day, highlighting the memorable experiences we had at Mc Way Falls and Partington Cove, both of which are perfect for families and nature lovers alike.

Without further ado, let’s go hiking!

Big Sur, California- McWay Falls is a Must!

Waterfall hiking McWay Falls is a must when hiking along the coast at Big Sur, California.

To start our Big Sur adventure, we headed straight to McWay Falls. This iconic waterfall is one of the most photographed spots on the coast, and for good reason. The falls cascade 80 feet directly into the Pacific Ocean, offering a truly magical view. As we arrived, we were immediately captivated by the sight of the waterfall framed by a crescent-shaped beach and surrounded by lush greenery. The area around McWay Falls is part of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. The short, accessible hike to view the falls is easy, making it perfect for families of all ages.

After snapping a few photos, we paused to enjoy the sound of waves crashing below. It felt as though time slowed down, and all that mattered was the incredible beauty surrounding us. The trail is a quick loop, taking us about an hour round trip, so it’s perfect for a family outing. What stood out most was how accessible this natural wonder was. We could enjoy its awe without any strenuous hiking. We also appreciated how well-maintained the area is, making it easy to enjoy without feeling crowded.

Partington Cove: Nature’s Playground

The secluded nature of Partington Cove creates an atmosphere of serenity, making it the perfect spot to reconnect with nature and enjoy some quiet time away from the more tourist-heavy spots in Big Sur.

Next, we made our way to Partington Cove, a hidden gem that boasts magnificent coastal views. Though it’s not as well-known as McWay Falls, Partington Cove offers a more intimate hiking experience with fewer crowds. The trail here is well-maintained and easy to follow, even for our young daughter, Maddy, who had a blast hiking along with us. The secluded nature of Partington Cove creates an atmosphere of serenity, making it the perfect spot to reconnect with nature and enjoy quiet time away from the crowds.

As we descended into the cove, we could hear the sound of water rushing through the narrow canyon. The scenery was truly enchanting, with vibrant coastal plant life and salty ocean air. Maddy, in particular, had a great time boulder hopping at the bottom of the trail. She found a running creek halfway down and couldn’t resist playing in it. The entire experience reminded us of how rewarding it is to immerse yourself in nature, especially in a place like Partington Cove. Watching her explore and get lost in the environment made the hike even more special.

Whale Watching and Coastal Views

While hiking the trails, we were fortunate enough to spot orcas in the distance.

We were lucky to be here during Orca season.

It was an unexpected surprise, but one that added to the magic of our day. We stood at the overlook and saw orcas swimming near the coastline. My wife Dawna and Maddy were particularly excited, as they’ve always wanted to see whales up close. The sight of these majestic creatures swimming was truly unforgettable, and it made our hike feel even more special. We all took a moment to appreciate the awe of seeing these animals in their natural habitat.

In addition to the whales, the views from both McWay Falls and Partington Cove were breathtaking. The coast offers a perfect balance of sight and sound—the crashing waves, the salty breeze, and the towering cliffs all make for a sensory experience that’s hard to match. It’s no wonder why so many people make the trip to Big Sur year after year. Whether you’re hiking the trails, taking photos, or simply sitting in awe, there’s no shortage of beauty to soak in.

Thoughts & Takeaways

Reflecting on our day, I can confidently say that Big Sur is a place worth visiting, especially for families. The short, kid-friendly hikes at McWay Falls and Partington Cove were perfect for immersing ourselves in nature without overwhelming anyone. The beauty of the coastline, combined with the chance to spot wildlife like orcas, made this an unforgettable trip. The experience was both peaceful and exhilarating, as we had the opportunity to see wildlife, enjoy scenic vistas, and feel connected to nature.

If you ever find yourself in the San Francisco Bay Area, I highly recommend taking the time to visit Big Sur. Both McWay Falls and Partington Cove offer incredible views, and experiencing nature in its purest form is something you won’t want to miss. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, photographer, or someone who appreciates breathtaking landscapes, Big Sur will not disappoint. It’s a place that offers something for everyone, making it an ideal destination for a day trip or a longer stay.
