Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies: Diving into History

The Famous Oklahoma Frid Pies started out as a simple recipe south of the Arbuckle Mountains.

It all started in the tiny town of Springer, Oklahoma (pop 689 to be exact). Maude Pletcher’s recipe was actually handed down and later was perfected by all nine of her kids.

Other farmers and ranchers played a role in this as well as they made frequent stops at the house.

So, in 1954, one of Maude’s sons, E.W. and his wife Lola, purchased the property where the Davis Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies shop is currently located.

With that being said, many developments began to slowly change the landscape as Interstate 35 was built which made this a very popular corridor.

Texaco leased the land and built a filling station in 1973. Eventually, the lease ended, and E.W. acquired ownership of the station and land once again.

But as owning any business, the difficulties began to manifest. Ace Pletcher (E.W.’s brother) asked if he place a Cattle Company Restaurant in the struggling station in 1984.

Paying homage to the memories of Maude’s fried pies, they began placing them on the menu and began to sell these delicious fried pastries.

Eventually, Ace moved onto another business and the station converted into a convenience store. E.W.’s son, Jerry and his wife Diane gained ownership of the tiny station and began selling his grandma’s original fried pies once again.

The rest is history. Business finally began to flourish as they turned more attention to the delicious pastries. Through the years, many flavors were eventually added, and the business began to expand.

Not only is this a famous staple in the Sooner State, but surrounding states as well began to take notice.

Business Oppurtunites

My favorite thing besides the outstanding fried pies, is the fact that they support entrepreneurs.

They believe in this simple mission. As a Pie shop operator, you are actually a licensee, not a franchise. What does this mean?

All you have to pay is the upfront licensing fee and agree to use the Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pie products and their exclusive pie making processes in exchange for the right to use their brand name, trademark, and logo.

They won’t dictate the size of the shop, location or the colors you paint the walls. From Grocery Stores to Restaurants, their licensees can come in many different forms.

I haven’t gotten to try all of these pies, but one thing I am certain of, Maude would be very proud of her family’s legacy.

From Savory to Sweet, you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. The Family tradition is tried and true and the fact that they support entrepreneurs is unique in its own way.
