Tahquamenon Falls should sit near the top of any Michigan adventure list. Recently, my wife Dawna and I spent a week exploring Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. One of our stops included the incredible Tahquamenon Falls State Park. We had the pleasure of experiencing both the Upper and Lower Falls. From the moment we arrived, we understood why this destination attracts so many visitors. Tahquamenon Falls offered beautiful scenery, impressive waterfalls, and peaceful walking trails. The entire experience gave us another wonderful memory from our time together.

 

 

The weather could not have been more perfect during our visit. Thankfully, the afternoon temperatures made walking around the park extremely enjoyable. We visited on a Sunday afternoon near the end of summer. The park was not overly crowded during our visit. Because of that, we had plenty of opportunities to take pictures. We could also stop frequently and enjoy the scenery around us. This place gave us exactly the outdoor experience we wanted during our Michigan trip.

Tahquamenon Falls: Exploring Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

 

 

 

 

 

 

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula offers countless opportunities for outdoor adventure. However, the Falls provides something especially memorable for waterfall enthusiasts. The park sits near Paradise, Michigan, making it an excellent Upper Peninsula destination. The area surrounding Paradise also provides plenty of natural beauty. As a result, the waterfall makes an excellent addition to a northern Michigan road trip.

 

 

Tahquamenon Falls State Park covers nearly 50,000 acres of northern wilderness. The park also contains more than 35 miles of hiking trails. Therefore, visitors can experience much more than the waterfalls themselves. The surrounding forest creates a peaceful setting throughout the entire property. We especially enjoyed walking through the park between different viewing areas. Additionally, the trails provided excellent opportunities for enjoying the scenery at our own pace.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Upper Falls

 

 

 

 

 

We walked away highly impressed with the views of both the upper and lower falls. Honestly, I couldn’t tell you which one I liked better. Both were equally impressive.

 

 

This massive waterfall stretches more than 200 feet across the Tahquamenon River. The waterfall also drops nearly 50 feet over its powerful edge. Because of its size, the Upper Falls creates an impressive sight from multiple viewpoints. The rushing water provides tremendous movement and energy throughout the surrounding landscape. Meanwhile, the surrounding forest creates a peaceful contrast against the powerful waterfall.

 

Another feature makes Tahquamenon Falls particularly recognizable. The river carries a distinctive amber color from tannins within the surrounding wetlands. As a result, the water looks dramatically different from many other waterfalls. That unique coloring creates excellent opportunities for photographers. Dawna and I enjoyed taking our time around the viewing areas. Fortunately, we had plenty of opportunities to capture pictures without feeling rushed.

 

The park provides several viewing areas around the Upper Falls. Visitors can also follow walking paths toward different perspectives. Furthermore, an accessible boardwalk reaches toward the Upper Falls brink. These options make it easier for visitors to experience the waterfall comfortably. For us, walking around the Upper Falls became one of our favorite parts.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Visiting the Lower Falls

 

 

 

 

 

The Lower Falls provided another memorable experience during our visit. Afterward, we made our way toward this beautiful section of Tahquamenon Falls State Park. The Lower Falls sit approximately four miles downstream from the Upper Falls. Several smaller cascades flow around an island within the river. Unlike the Upper Falls, the Lower Falls provide a more spread-out experience.

 

The scenery around the Lower Falls creates plenty of opportunities for photography. Visitors can also reach the island using a pedestrian footbridge. Additionally, rowboat rentals provide another way to experience the area. We enjoyed seeing the different personalities of both waterfall sections. While the Upper Falls offered greater power, the Lower Falls felt more relaxed. Together, they created a well-rounded experience during our afternoon visit.

 

 

 

 

 

The Hiking Trails were Clean

 

 

 

 

 

 

We got our steps in, however this was a relatively easy park to just walk through without having to catch your breath.

 

 

One feature we especially appreciated was the park’s extensive trail system. The trails provide opportunities for short walks and longer outdoor adventures. In addition, the North Country Trail travels through approximately 16 miles. Several other trails provide access to different areas throughout the park. Therefore, hikers can create an experience that matches their available time.

 

We particularly enjoyed the walking trails surrounding the waterfalls. The paths gave us opportunities to enjoy the forest between viewing areas. At the same time, we never felt like we needed to rush. That slower pace allowed us to appreciate the surrounding scenery. For visitors who enjoy hiking, Tahquamenon Falls provides plenty of additional opportunities. You can easily spend an entire day exploring beyond the main waterfalls.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Why Tahquamenon State Park Should Be on Your List

 

 

 

 

 

Tahquamenon Falls offers much more than an impressive waterfall. Instead, visitors receive a combination of hiking, photography, forests, and peaceful scenery. The Upper Peninsula already provides countless opportunities for outdoor exploration. However, Tahquamenon Falls adds something especially memorable to the experience. The amber-colored river creates a scene unlike many waterfalls across the country.

 

Dawna and I both enjoyed experiencing the Upper and Lower Falls. The waterfall itself was nothing short of amazing. Additionally, the park’s walking trails made exploring both areas enjoyable. We never felt like we needed to hurry through our visit. Most importantly, the entire experience gave us another wonderful Michigan travel memory.

 

Tahquamenon Falls also provides something for several different types of travelers. Families can enjoy the accessible areas and shorter walking opportunities. Photographers can find plenty of interesting views throughout the park. Meanwhile, hikers can explore longer trails throughout the surrounding wilderness. Nature lovers can spend hours enjoying the forests and river. Because of that, almost anyone can find something enjoyable at Tahquamenon Falls.

Our visit to Tahquamenon Falls became one of the highlights of our Michigan adventure. After spending an entire week exploring the state, this destination stood out. Dawna and I loved seeing both sections of the waterfall. We also appreciated the clean facilities and well-maintained walking trails. Thankfully, our Sunday afternoon visit provided beautiful weather and manageable crowds. That combination made it easy to slow down and enjoy everything around us.

Take time to visit both the Upper and Lower Falls. Bring your camera because you will find plenty of memorable views.
