The Trinity River stretches across North Texas and reaches the Gulf Coast region. This river flows for roughly 710 miles through the state. The Trinity River carries deep historical importance throughout Texas history. Native American crews once depended on the river for survival and transportation. The Caddo people lived near the river long before European explorers arrived. Later, Spanish explorers traveled through the region during the 1600s.

The river eventually became important for trade and settlement across Texas. Steamboats once traveled sections of the Trinity River during the nineteenth century. Communities along the river relied heavily on transportation and commerce opportunities. Consequently, several Texas towns experienced rapid growth near the waterway.

Flooding also shaped much of the river’s modern history. Large floods damaged nearby communities throughout the early twentieth century. Because of this, Texas leaders developed flood control systems and levees. Today, those improvements protect many neighborhoods and surrounding businesses.
