Trinidad Lake State Park: A Special Trip in 2020

The views of Trinidad, Colorado from our back porch at the Airbnb we rented was nothing short of amazement.

Trinidad Lake State Park sits near the scenic foothills of Southern Colorado. The park surrounds beautiful Trinidad Lake with rolling hills and rugged mountain views. Meanwhile, travelers enjoy peaceful mornings and colorful evening skies across the region.

The park attracts kayakers, anglers, campers, and hikers throughout the entire year. Additionally, visitors appreciate the calm atmosphere and welcoming outdoor environment. Trinidad itself also offers restaurants, golfing, and historic charm nearby. Because of this, travelers easily create memorable weekend adventures.

The lake remains the true centerpiece of the park experience. Crystal waters reflect the surrounding hills during sunrise and sunset hours. Consequently, photographers and nature lovers often feel completely mesmerized there.

A Memorable 2020 Colorado Adventure

As we approach six years since Covid, I often reflect on that unusual season. During that time, outdoor adventures became even more meaningful for many families. When the world shut down, my adventures certainly did not stop.

I worked as an insurance agent during that period. Fortunately, my schedule allowed remote work and flexible travel opportunities. That freedom helped me continue exploring beautiful places across the country.

One of my favorite trips happened during spring 2020 in Trinidad, Colorado. I traveled there with my wife Dawna and my brother Timmy. Together, we explored Southern Colorado while enjoying peaceful mountain scenery.

We spent several days kayaking Trinidad Lake and soaking in the surrounding beauty. At the same time, we golfed, hiked, and explored the nearby region. Every moment felt refreshing after stressful months during the pandemic season.

My wife’s family actually comes from nearby Walsenburg. Because of that, our trip carried emotional meaning beyond outdoor adventure. We visited her ancestors’ grave site while spending time in Southern Colorado. That experience added heartfelt perspective to our unforgettable weekend.

Kayaking and Fishing on Trinidad Lake

Trinidad Golf Course is only a 9 hole course, but it was great getting a round in with mountain views.

Kayaking Trinidad Lake quickly became the highlight of our adventure. The calm water created perfect conditions for relaxing outdoor recreation. Early each morning, Timmy and I launched our kayaks onto the peaceful lake.

We spent hours fishing while drifting across beautiful Colorado waters. Along the way, we caught rainbow trout and smallmouth bass throughout the trip. Every cast felt exciting beneath the warm spring sunshine.

The surrounding mountain scenery made every moment even more enjoyable. Furthermore, wildlife sightings added another layer of beauty during our paddling sessions. We watched birds soar above the lake while gentle winds crossed the water.

Fishing from a kayak always creates a unique connection with nature. For example, quiet waters allow anglers to fully appreciate their peaceful surroundings. Trinidad Lake delivered that experience perfectly during our unforgettable weekend.

Mountain Views and Peaceful Cabin Life

Being there only for a few days, we enjoyed getting a chance to catch the sunrise each morning when we were in Southern Colorado.

Our Airbnb rental made the trip even more memorable. The cabin sat remotely in the mountains with incredible panoramic views. Interestingly, the property operated completely through solar panels.

The peaceful atmosphere felt worlds away from stressful headlines and crowded cities. Instead, we enjoyed quiet mornings surrounded by mountain air and natural beauty. That sense of calm felt incredibly valuable during 2020.

We cooked meals using cast iron cookware throughout the weekend. Afterward, we relaxed outdoors while watching colorful Colorado sunsets appear across the horizon. Every evening brought another breathtaking display of mountain scenery.

Sunrises also became unforgettable moments during our stay. Likewise, cool mountain mornings created perfect conditions for coffee and reflection outdoors. Those peaceful experiences still remain vivid memories years later.

Hiking and Exploring Southern Colorado

Downtown Trinidad, Colorado had plenty of places to eat and explore the area.

Southern Colorado offers far more than beautiful lakes and fishing opportunities. Beyond the water, travelers discover excellent hiking trails and scenic driving routes nearby. The region combines rugged beauty with welcoming small-town charm.

We explored hiking areas surrounding Trinidad during our visit. As expected, every trail revealed stunning landscapes and wide-open mountain views. Fresh air and peaceful surroundings created a refreshing outdoor experience.

Golfing also added fun variety to our adventure-filled weekend. Meanwhile, local scenery made every activity feel even more memorable. Southern Colorado truly offers something enjoyable for every traveler.

Visitors often rush through destinations too quickly today. However, Trinidad Lake State Park deserves slow and meaningful exploration. The beauty there encourages travelers to pause and appreciate the outdoors again.
