Lake Murray State Park: A Park Steeped in History and Natural Beauty

Lake Murray is often called one of Oklahoma’s original gems—and for good reason. Spanning over 12,000 acres, the park surrounds the crystal-clear lake of the same name. With rolling hills, thick forests, and stunning water views, the landscape never fails to impress.
On Saturday, I introduced my family to Tucker Tower, one of the park’s most iconic landmarks. Originally planned as a governor’s retreat, construction paused during World War II. Since 1981, the tower has operated as a historic museum.
It’s open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and I highly recommend carving out an hour to explore. Near the top, you’ll find a Mastodon skull on display. The views from the top? Absolutely breathtaking.

Interestingly, this park was built in the 1930s as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal programs. Structures like Tucker Tower and the original cabins were crafted by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Today, they stand as proud reminders of American resilience and craftsmanship.

Our Return to a Childhood Favorite

In addition to the gorgeous views, we had our nostalgic moments at the lake.
This past weekend, we had the pleasure of spending time at one of the OG parks—Lake Murray. I have great childhood memories camping here as a kid. Honestly, it was one of the first state parks I remember visiting. We would set up camp near Elephant Rock or Buzzard’s Roost, spending days exploring trails and splashing in the water.
However, this time was a little different. With warmer temperatures and my wife and kiddo Maddy joining me, we decided to ditch the tents. Instead, we stayed at the newly built Lake Murray Lodge—and what an incredible experience it was!
Moreover, it was great making new memories while recollecting our childhood moments at the lake.
The Lake Murray Lodge Experience

So, let’s talk about the Lodge for a minute shall we.
The new lodge is a game changer. Everything feels fresh, clean, and thoughtfully designed. From the moment we walked in, the experience felt more like a resort than a traditional state park lodge.
The gift shop is well-stocked with souvenirs and essentials. Meanwhile, The Lookout Restaurant delivers mouthwatering burgers and sandwiches, all while offering panoramic views of the lake’s eastern shore.
Our room came fully equipped with modern furnishings, a plush bed, and stylish decor. Each morning, we enjoyed coffee on our patio as the sun rose over the water. It was quiet, peaceful, and deeply refreshing.
Adventure Begins at the Water’s Edge
I wish I could have taken pictures of the water sports at Lake Murray State Park. But I had good reason not to.
I was too busy enjoying it myself.
Later that afternoon, we hit the water again. This time, it was all about water sports and floating fun for Maddy, who’s about to turn six. Though I didn’t snap pictures (because I was busy playing too), the lake offered floating trampolines, slides, and several obstacle-style inflatables.
Life jackets are required, but you can rent them nearby for about $10 each. Everything felt safe, well-maintained, and family-friendly.
Dining at The Lookout – Again!

That evening, we headed to the Lookout restaurant for dinner. We had tried it before at Quartz Mountain State Park
and were happy to find the same consistency here. The food was fresh, the service was friendly, and the views made it all even better.
As a storm rolled in and the skies darkened, we felt the tired satisfaction that only a day in nature brings. After hours in the sun and on the water, we were ready to wind down and reflect.
Location, Convenience, and Easy Access
One of the best parts about Lake Murray is how accessible it is. Being just a short drive from Norman or even Oklahoma City, you can easily escape the bustle and arrive by dinner on a Friday night.
With so much to do and see, it’s ideal for weekend trips. From hiking trails and golf courses to beaches and boat rentals, the park provides options for all interests and ages.
Thoughts & Takeaways
And that will wrap things up for today.
Lake Murray State Park remains a timeless destination that blends history, comfort, and adventure. Whether you’re reliving childhood memories or creating new ones with your family, this park delivers.
The new lodge adds a layer of luxury while preserving the natural charm that has always made this place special. From Tucker Tower’s rich history to sunrise views over the water, every moment here feels meaningful.
Our weekend reminded me just how important it is to step away from screens and step into nature. With friendly staff, modern amenities, and that unbeatable Oklahoma hospitality, Lake Murray continues to set the bar high for state parks.
