The Pioneer Woman Mercantile: Pawhuska’s Famed Eatery

The Pioneer Woman Mercantile first opened its doors in October of 2016, and since then has been the talk of this small town for over 6 years.

Ree Drummond has turned this Northern Oklahoma gem into one of the best eateries in the country.

I recently had the pleasure of taking my family up there for some southern hospitality matched with delicious comfort food to go with it.

I personally have never met Ree, but I have been a huge fan of hers for quite some time.

Without further ado, Let’s go jump into the article!

Where is the Pioneer Woman Mercantile?

The Pioneer Woman Mercantile is located in Northern Oklahoma in the tiny town of Pawhuska.

This bakery-giftshop-restaurant is located in Northern Oklahoma in the tiny town of Pawhuska.  They are located 150 miles Northeast of Oklahoma City and about an hour Northwest of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Pawhuska with a small population of 2,948 residents, is known for its Native American culture and small-town charm.

Located in the heart of Osage County, the mercantile attracts thousands of visitors from all parts of the world with its delicious cuisine and southern hospitality.

As a matter of fact, they serve about 6,000 guests per day while they are open Mon-Sat.

The Bakery

The bakery is located upstairs in the building, and you can choose your favorite pastry along with some famous cowboy coffee.

I recently had the pleasure of taking my family up there during Christmas break. We were told it would be close to 3 hours for us to get a table.

While waiting for our table, we went upstairs to enjoy some outstanding pastries and coffee. They have several options for Danish and croissants. I elected to get my usual Americano black and shared the glazed apple Danish with my wife Dawna.

With a large open floor plan, they had plenty of comfortable couches in the lounging area along with plenty of seating.

I loved the fact that the area had nice big windows to catch a glimpse of the historic downtown area. All in all, the bakery helped break up the long wait with its ambiance and friendly bakery staff.

The Giftshop

Ree and her husband wanted to create a shopping experience that paid homage to small town America.

The Giftshop along with the bakery was equally impressive if you ask me. I am a huge fan of cast-iron cooking, and they had a great selection of skillets that I had my eyes on.

From toys to jewelry, this giftshop had something for everyone. This place also takes you back in time with the old furniture and nostalgic vibe it puts off.

They had old rustic shelving located along the hundred-year-old building with old timey candles and cookware that littered the place.

This was a cool experience and again broke up more of the wait time.

The Food

The French Onion Soup at the Pioneer Woman Mercantile.

At the Pioneer Woman Mercantile, the bar was set high for both of us, and they didn’t disappoint.

I started off with a hot bowl of French onion soup that was dripping on both sides of the bowl when I received it.

The soup was outstanding along with the presentation. For my meal I wanted a good ole fashioned chicken fried steak and that is exactly what I got.

The Pioneer Woman has several comfort foods options to choose from including the famous Chicken fried steak.

After enjoying the French onion soup, it was time to enjoy one of my favorite Oklahoma food staples. The good ole fashioned Chicken fried steak.

Their version is quite impressive. They use a beef tenderloin cut of meat that is perfectly breaded and paired with homemade mashed potatoes.

The peppered white gravy was just as good. We filled up and enjoyed the great service and we both left full as a tick.

Often at times, it is difficult to wait that long for a table only to get fooled with subpar food and service. This wasn’t the case at all for us. They exceeded our expectations, and we will definitely be coming back again.
