Where is the Artesian Hotel?
This famous hotel is located in the heart of Sulphur, Oklahoma (Approximately 90 miles south of Oklahoma City).
Sulphur, Oklahoma is on the footsteps of the Arbuckle Mountains in Southern Oklahoma. With that being said, you aren’t only in a luxury hotel, but you’re in one of the Sooner State’s most scenic spots too.
This area of Southern Oklahoma has the Chickasaw National Recreation Area and Turner Falls, so the itinerary for exploring will be inviting while you’re spending the weekend here.
The History of the Hotel.
I won’t spend too much time boring you with history intel, but this place does have a little history tied to it that’s worth mentioning.
The original hotel was built in 1906 using bricks from the Bland Hotel and decorated with furniture from the St. Louis World’s Fair.
It was a four-story brick building and contained only one elevator. There were two architects that named it after an artesian well was discovered during the construction phase.
During the early part of its history, this hotel served as a summer residence for Oklahoma’s first governor, Charles Haskell.
In 1962, the original hotel was destroyed by fire and had to be rebuilt. Three years later, the hotel was replaced at a cost of five hundred thousand dollars. It was then renamed the Artesian Motor Hotel.
In 1972, The hotel was on the verge of bankruptcy and was purchased by the Chickasaw Nation at a nearby auction.
From 1972 to 1977, this was the tribal headquarters before it found its permanent home in nearby Ada, Oklahoma.
The new building you see today, resembles the 1906 model and it was completely finished in October of 2010.
