How to Choose the Best Tent for Camping in 2022

So, how do you choose the best tent for camping you might ask?

Buying a tent for camping is similar to purchasing a car, golf clubs, or even a kayak. Too much choice equals confusion.

Not to worry- That is why I am here today:

In this article, I will discuss the characteristics you should look for when you choose to buy the best tent for camping in 2022.

Without further ado, Let’s jump into the article.

How to Choose the Best Tent for Camping in 2022

Consider the Tent’s material when choosing

You will want to check the tent’s material closely, as this could definitely influence your purchase choice.

Tents that are made from canvas (cotton) are waterproof but become very heavy when the water is absorbed. However, they are long lasting and don’t deteriorate as much as, say, nylon.

Nylon and polyester tents are waterproof, but sunlight will cause deterioration over time.

Also, look at the zips of the tent. This is frequently overlooked. Should that tent zip fail, you could have some unwelcomed visitors in your tent! Check that the zip is a quality one, moves easily, and doesn’t catch on fabric.

The zipper is an underrated feature when it comes to choosing a high-quality tent.

Choose the Correct Size

Tents will be advertised as a 1 person, 2 person, 3 person, 4 person etc. size tent. This sizing is an indicator of how many people can fit in a tent lying down next to each other.

If you plan on using sleeping cots or inflatable mattresses, keep in mind those will take up more room than just your sleeping bags.

Will you bring your dog camping too? You will need to choose a tent big enough for your furry friend then. Also, you will want to consider room for storing your gear.

The tent peak height is an important consideration too. Choose the tent that will be comfortable for you and that will be long enough to accommodate that person’s height when they are lying down or sleeping diagonally.

Choose a good footprint

A tent footprint is a piece of protective material that goes under your tent.  Having this will protect your tent floor and will add years to the life of your tent.

Not all tents will come with a footprint. Other manufacturers will sell footprints for specific tent models. If you plan on camping a lot, then I would choose to spend the money on this item.

For the cheaper route, you can choose to buy an inexpensive tarp. They can be folded or cut to fit under the tent. Always be sure the tarp does not extend beyond the tent floor. Water can puddle on the tarp and run under your tent.

Choosing to buy a footprint will preserve the life of your tent.

Don’t always choose on price

I assume that price will be a factor when you choose to buy a great camping tent. It was for me too. Prices can range from 50 dollars to hundreds of dollars for the premium tents.

I always recommend starting out somewhere in the middle of that price range.

Some people will disagree with me on that; they think you should start out with the best you can afford.

I understand the argument; you don’t want to spend so little you end up with a piece of junk. However, spending lots of money on a tent you might not use a whole lot isn’t wise either.

Just like gear for any hobby, higher quality often costs more.

I wouldn’t be discouraged though, most campers are happy with moderately priced tents.

Nemo has an outstanding reputation when it comes to high quality tents.

Choose a Tent with Excellent Ventilation

If you haven’t camped in a tent before, you may not be aware of how horrendous it is to wake up in the morning to everything being damp.

That is why ventilation is important in choosing a good tent. You will need to look for tents that have ventilation available when the rain fly is on. Also look for well-placed vents to minimize condensation.

Ventilation is an important factor in choosing a good camping tent.
